The table saw is often the centerpiece of a wood shop, largely due to it’s versatility. Woodworkers use it to rip, square, miter, groove, shape and join pieces. Table saws come in many different shapes and sizes but generally speaking, there are 4 types, which we’ve explored below:
A bench top table saw (aka “saw bench”) is designed to be light, portable and affordable, thus making it a common choice for homeowners. They are usually direct-drive and will cut more accurately than a circular saw. However, if you’re planning on ripping very large pieces of wood or sheet goods, a bench top table saw may struggle to do the job. In that case, you might want to consider using a guide rail and circular saw or choose from one of the other options below.
Contractor table saws also relatively compact and portable but are also built to be more robust and powerful, resulting in more accurate cuts. They are a good choice for more serious "do-it-yourselfers”. If you’ll be cutting very dense woods on a regular basis, engine power may become an issue for you but if you don’t consider more vibration and dust to be big deal, a contractor saw should be a good fit. Speaking of good fit, a contractor table saw does not take up a lot of space.
A hybrid saw looks like a cabinet saw but internally is more like a contractor saw. It uses contractor saw trunnion assemblies and is usually hang mounted from the bottom of the table as opposed to cabinet saw trunnion assemblies, which are supported by the top of the cabinet. It should give you a high level of accuracy and substantial power.
Cabinet Table Saws
Cabinet table saws are the most powerful of the 4 types, so if you’re working with dense wood frequently and you have the room for it, this is the saw for you. It is much heavier than the above choices (and more expensive) but it will cut smoothly through just about anything wooden. Its closed cabinet base controls dust and its increased power will ensure less burned cuts. The downside to their power is that you’ll need a 220V outlet so you’ll want to consult an electrician before purchasing.
