Fleas Control Overview

Fleas serve to be a major issue, especially in homes that have pets. It's important to check for fleas in any living area because they are dormant and can be awoken with the presence of new people or by feeling vibrations through the floor.

While flea bites do not hurt, they can cause itching and discomfort. Fleas can transmit diseases and can cause discomfort not only to humans but to pets as well.

Thankfully, treatments are available to exterminate and protect your home from fleas.

How Did I Get Fleas?

Flea infestations begin from a pet bringing them into the house. Whether it is a dog or cat, these pests will cling to the animal outdoors, and then continue to infest the animal’s fur once indoors.

Fleas jump onto pets in order to find blood meals that are critical for their survival. However, if the pet that is infestation is removed from the home, fleas will look for a new pet or person to feed on.

Signs of Fleas

There are many signs that can indicate a flea infestation. The first sign of a flea infestation is a pet that is constantly scratching. If a pet is always grooming themselves or scratching, they may be feeling the discomfort created by fleas that are feeding on blood.

Another sign is bites on pets and humans. Bites can cause red marks and skin irritation. While fleas may bite the entire bodies of pets, they commonly target the legs when it comes to humans.

Feces near pet beds, carpets, rugs and other areas where your pet rests is also a sign of a flea infestation. Check around your pet’s belongings for flea feces that looks similar to ground black pepper.

Lastly, you may notice adult fleas or their eggs laying around. Adult fleas are easier to see as they can be spotted jumping around on jumps or pets. Eggs on the other hand are difficult to locate. Eggs can be found under furniture, in pet beddings, in carpets and within any small cracks. Moreover, any eggs laid on your pet may fall off and be distributed amongst areas where your pet frequently wanders.

Flea Bites

Flea bites can cause major irritation in both pets and humans. In some cases, flea saliva can cause allergic reactions. The constant scratching can lead to hair loss in pets which may further result in infections and sores.

To treat a flea bite on your pet, it is recommended to consult with a veterinarian first. However, some common solutions include bathing your pet with special shampoos and using cold water to reduce inflammation. If these simple solutions do not work, a pet may recommend steroid creams and prescribe antihistamines.

For humans, treating flea bites is a little different. Some simple steps that can be taken include washing the bite, utilizing an antiseptic, applying ice, and even using lotions to reduce the urge to itch. If these home remedies do not work, a doctor may recommend antihistamines.

How Do I Get Rid of Fleas?

The best course of action is to remove fleas immediately once signs are present. Steps to remove fleas include vacuuming in the home, especially in areas where your pest takes naps or sleeps. After cleaning your pet’s area, remove the vacuum cleaner and clean all rugs and beddings outside. By cleaning the bedding outside, it is easier to get rids of fleas and eggs. Additionally, it is important to wash pet bedding weekly and ensure that any bedding is kept far away from carpets. WHen washing any fabric, use water above 49 degrees to kill the fleas.

What Do Fleas Look Like?

To the naked eye, fleas are really tiny and can be difficult to spot. They usually are noticed crawling on pets with white fur.

Fleas are yellow, red or dark brown in color and are easy to spot on light colored fur. These pests are shiny, have tiny hair, and compressed bodies to easily navigate through animal fur. While fleas do not have wings, they jump long distances which gives the illusion that they are flying.

How Do Fleas Move Around?

Fleas do not fly, but they can jump! Fleas will jump onto a host which is usually an animal.

Fleas larvae are also capable of moving around. While slow in movement, they are able to crawl in hopes of finding food and a moist location where they feel protected.

Do Fleas Carry Disease?

Fleas can transmit diseases to both pets and humans while feeding on blood or through contiaminated feces.

Humans are commonly encountered with diseases such as the plague, typhus, bartonellosis, flea tapeworm, and tungiasis. The plague and bartonellosis are transmitted by the oriental rat flea. Typhus is transmitted through feces containing bacteria that enters the body through a bite or from scratching. Tapeworm is transmitted commonly to children if the flea is eaten or if the child has come in contact with infected flea feces. Lastly, tungiasis is caused by the chigoe flea when it feeds on blood.

Pets on the other hand can contract the plague, murine typhus, parasitic dermatitis, cat scratch disease, flea tapeworm and anemia. Parasitic dermatitis is a result of a pet’s allergy to fleas that causes the skin to become itchy. Cat scratch disease also known as bartonella henselae is a disease solely transmitted by a special type of fleas. Flea tapeworm is an infection that is caused when a cat eats fleas that are infected. Lastly, anemia is caused as a result of numerous fleas feeding on blood at the same time.

Flea Prevention

Prevent fleas from entering the home by sealing cracks and holes around the house to keep rodents that may be carrying fleas at bay.

Moreover, it is critical to get rid of the problem outdoors so that it does not protrude indoors.
