Skating has been around forever and comes in many different forms. Originally, Ice Skates were invented in colder climates for the purpose of transportation during winter. It eventually developed into a fun pastime where sports like Figure Skating, Speed Skating and Hockey were created. Then came Roller Skates that were built to allow for skating on pavement and that changed everything. They were built to be more like a car than an ice skate with 2 wheels at the front of the foot and 2 at the back. No longer were skates just for winter as now you didn't need ice to use them. However, while Ice Skates continued and developed, roller skates fizzled out and were eventually replaced by something even better.
Enter the Inline Skate. Commonly referred to as Rollerblades, which is technically a brand, Inline Skates changed skating on ground forever. Designed to act and fit more like an ice skate with 2 to 4 wheels lined up along the length of the boot, the possibilities for skating on ground became endless. They became much easier and much faster and a great form of training and exercise. As their popularity continued to grow, so did the options from which to choose. There are many factors to consider when buying Inline Skates to ensure you get the optimal experience. First is the boot.
Boots
It is imperative that you get a boot that is both comfortable and supportive. An ill-fitting boot will cause pain and discomfort and ruin the experience altogether. They should fit your ankle and foot snugly, but still allow your ankle to flex forward for balance. Beginner skaters should look for a more supportive ankle cuff that is higher while an advanced skater should look for a flexible and lower ankle cuff allowing them to make sharper turns. It cannot be stressed enough, comfort and support are the key to a good skate.
Closures
The next thing to consider is the closure of the skate. The better the closure, the more secure the boot becomes. Good closures also make it much easier to get the skates on and off. There are different types to choose from such as Standard-Lacing like an ice skate, Quick-Lacing which laces itself by just pulling a string, Velcro-Lacing which usually are used to compliment standard lacing, and Ratchet Buckles that snap closed around the ankle. Each are effective and have their own advantages/disadvantage depending on preference.
Wheels & Bearings
The type of wheels you want depends on the type of skating you do. For maximum speed, buy skates with larger and harder wheels. For optimal control and maneuverability, buy skates with smaller and softer wheels. Bearings are also important as they factor in the smoothness, speed, and overall ride quality. They are usually graded on the ABEC system and the rating can be found somewhere on the skate itself. The higher the rating, the better the quality.
Brakes & Protective Equipment
Brakes are available with Inline Skates but usually on beginner ones. We use the term "Brake" loosely as they are more like rubber stoppers that help you slow down. They're found on the back of the boot with the intention of raising the front of your foot so the brake hits the ground helping you slow down. Brakes are very much optional.
What should not be optional is the use of protective equipment. At the very least a helmet is a must to protect your head, but it is also recommended that you wear hand, elbow and knee pads as well. You never know when you might have an accident or fall and the more protection the better to avoid scrapes and bruises.
