Bassinets Overview

Newborn babies love to sleep and as a parent, you want to be able to provide your little one with a sleeping space that is both safe and comfortable. A bassinet is a small sleeping area for babies that is smaller than a crib, but more convenient.

Generally, a bassinet is kept next to your bed so that you can easily care for your baby in the middle or the night, or place them near you during the day.

So, which bassinet is perfect for you and your baby? Your purchase decision may be influenced by your parenting style and sleeping goals, however considering the safety of your baby is always the most crucial aspect. There are also many other important factors to consider such as breathability, whether it is machine washable, functionality, portability, accessibility and more.

With so many options, we’ve done our best to narrow down your search by comparing some of the most popular bassinets on the market. We’re confident that our comparison will help determine which bassinet will best suit you and your baby’s needs.

Why a Bassinet?

While Bassinets are not a mandatory item for your baby, they are a great option for keeping your baby safe and close in the first few months after birth. Safe sleep experts recommend that babies sleep in the same room with parents for the first 6 months as it increases the opportunity for bonding between Mother and Baby while potentially decreasing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Since baby is within arm’s reach, a bassinet makes those middle-of-the-night feeding sessions a lot easier as well, especially for new Mom's recovering from delivery with little mobility. There are many benefits but none greater than the convenience and peace of mind they can provide for new parents.

Types of Bassinets

There are many options of Bassinets available and they come in 3 basic types, the Co-Sleeper, the Freestanding, and the Travel Bassinet. All are pretty self-explanatory and serve different needs.

The Co-sleeper is specifically designed to allow parents to reach over and tend to their baby without getting out of bed. They usually attach to the master bed or sit close enough that they can swing or sit directly next to it and some even include a movable sidewall. This is handy for breast-feeding Moms or those healing from C-Section.

Free-Standing Bassinets are generally larger and designed to stand alone from the bed. This means that parents need to get out of bed to feed or care for baby, although many manufacturers are creating more versatile options with lowerable side wall as well. They are typically sturdier with a strong frame and often have additional storage space and wheels to move it from room to room. They allow you to be in the same room as your baby but not the same bed.

Finally, the Travel Bassinet allows you to do just that. They're great for travelling families or those who rely on Day Care as the baby gets to sleep in the bed it feels comfortable in no matter where you are. They often come with a removable bassinet and fold up frame so they're also good for famiies with limited space.

Safety Considerations

As of April 2014, all Bassinets are required to meet safety standards set out by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). For this reason it is not recommended that you buy used. However, if you do, make sure to look for labels from JPMA or ASTM as these groups participated in voluntary saftey standards prior to the new mandatory standards. Beyond that there are general rules to follow to ensure ultimate safety.

Try to avoid having hanging accessories like toys or materials that can cause entanglement or strangulation. This includes mobiles that didn't come with the Bassinet. Only use mattresses provided by the manufacturer and ensure that it fits tightly to the Bassinet frame. Also ensure that the mattress is made of non-flammable materials. Ensure all surfaces are smooth and that there are no sharp edges anywhere. Finally, remove any extra blankets, pillows, stuffed animals or the like in the Bassinet with baby and use breathable materials such as mesh as much as possible to avoid risk of suffocation.
